ESTATE PLANNING

Planning for the future is something that we tend to put off until the last possible minute. When it comes to your children, your estate, and your health, it is very important to take a few minutes to make sure these affairs are in order. I handle a wide variety of estate matters, including: (1) the drafting of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives; (2) probate; and (3) probate litigation. If you do not have a will or your circumstances have changed and you need to revise a previous will, call me for a free consultation. We can discuss your circumstances, and talk about the steps necessary to ensure that your family is protected. If you are leaving on a trip and need the will drafted quickly, Dan can work quickly to see that your needs are met.

Health Care Directive

A Health Directive, also commonly referred to as a living will, directs the withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from a patient in a terminal condition or permanent unconscious state. Through the implementation of a health care directive, you can make your own decisions ahead of time and prevent a family member or somebody else close to you from having to make them for you.
In Washington State, life-sustaining treatment will not be withdrawn or withheld from a patient unless that patient is diagnosed with a terminal condition by the treating physician or the patient is deemed to be in an unconscious state by two physicians. RCW 70.122.030(2).
Having a health care directive lets the treating physicians know what your wishes are so that in the event that a decision needs to be made about whether to stop life-sustaining treatment, your family and loved one’s will not be at odds.
